Before your visit - FAQ

The Museum of Pain and Love is not a place to walk through in silence – but to laugh, reflect and be together.
With a unique mix of entertaining exhibitions, interactive stations, exciting events and surprising knowledge, we invite you to immerse yourself in the world of great emotions. Love and pain are not just topics here – they can be experienced. And along the way, you will not only learn something about others, but also about yourself.

You’ll enjoy our museum most if you’re curious and open to new ideas. If you like to laugh, play, reflect, or dive into conversations with others, you’ll feel right at home here.

Our museum is especially for people who…

  • enjoy discovering big stories behind small everyday objects,

  • like to learn new sides of their friends, partners, or family through conversations,

  • are open to mixing the deep and the silly,

  • appreciate surprises and are willing to try something different.

Who might not be so happy here:

  • people expecting a classic art exhibition where you only look at paintings,

  • those who prefer to just stroll through passively without engaging,

  • visitors who dislike reading or have no interest in stories,

  • anyone who avoids board games or playful tasks altogether,

  • people who take a very critical stance toward Artificial Intelligence – since some of our decoration pictures are generated by A.I.

We give all visitors the opportunity to return their ticket if, after 15 minutes, they realise that the museum does not meet their expectations. Our experience shows that you can get a feel for the museum relatively quickly, and this time is sufficient to form an impression. Tastes vary, and it is perfectly fine if someone does not like it here.

It all depends on how deep you immerse yourself in the stories – usually between 2 and 3 hours, but who knows, maybe you’ll stay all day!

No, just come within the opening hours. We recommend that you plan 2-3 hours if you want to experience as many stations as possible.

Yes. If you have already purchased a ticket but are unable to attend on that day for any reason, you can use your ticket on another day. Simply explain your situation at reception and state the date for which the ticket was originally valid.

Yes, definitely! The children enjoy lots of simple games! There are also Lego, something to draw, knead and stories to read.

Of course, there are stations that can be emotionally exhausting for children, but they are never upsetting.

No – here you go your own way.

The museum is designed so that you can discover it independently and at your own pace. Each station invites you to take a closer look, ask questions and let your own curiosity guide you.

Sure, we’ve thought of your thirst! There are no snacks, but there is a refreshing selection of non-alcoholic drinks – from sparkling water to fruity lemonade. Perfect for refreshing yourself during your voyage of discovery with us!

Fortunately not! Our museum is shaded and well insulated – so it stays pleasantly cool inside. And for extra freshness, our stylish anti-sweat turbines provide a quiet draught. Without air conditioning, but with brains.

Yes, of course! All stations are bilingual – German and English. So you can understand every riddle, every story and every aha moment without a translator or interpreter.

No, you don’t need to book in advance – our museum is like life: just turn up and be surprised. But if you want to play it safe or turn up with a whole football team, just let us know.

For the best experience, we recommend visiting with at least two people – many stations thrive on exchange, shared laughter, and personal stories.
Of course, you can also go through the exhibition on your own. In that case, the focus is more on the stories and reflection questions that invite you to think about yourself. Many stations can be done solo, but the experience is usually less playful and humorous than when shared with others.

As there is a lot to read, we recommend packing your reading glasses.

If you are travelling with a backpack or similar: no problem! You can store your belongings in the entrance area free of charge.

Of course, you can book our museum for private events! Whether for birthdays, company parties or a rather unusual wedding – we are open to (almost) anything. Just send us a message, tell us what you’re planning and we’ll see how we can make your event unforgettable. And don’t worry: we’ll make sure that only the desired emotions boil over.

In most corners, you can take pictures with your mobile phone – for private use, of course. At some special exhibitions, however, the motto is: camera off, eyes open! Just look out for the little signs – they’ll tell you what’s what.

Unfortunately, affordable parking spaces in the immediate vicinity are limited. There are two car parks within walking distance at Rheinauhafen, and there are also several parking options in the surrounding area that can be booked in advance online (via Ampido). Parking spaces are also available directly on site, but these cost €1 per 15 minutes.

Unfortunately not completely – some areas are currently only accessible via stairs. But don’t worry: our team will be happy to help you wherever possible – be it with a helping hand or with transport from A to B. Just talk to us and we’ll find a solution together!

Unfortunately not. As much as we love dogs, the museum environment is full of stimuli – sudden movements, unexpected sounds, and a lot of activity – which can be very stressful for animals. We also need to consider visitors with dog allergies. For these reasons, dogs are not allowed inside the museum.

Yes, we do. However, they can only be purchased on site.
